PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Inspired by a 'warm-contemporary' design, the 4,700 Sq.ft. residence is situated at the top of the Avenues, one of the oldest areas in Salt Lae City, with an incredible view over the valley. It exemplifies an innovative approach to design, where the focus is on the human experience and the connection and interaction between the user and its environment (both natural and built), offering a constant stimulus for active engagement of the space through rich materials, detailed finishes, hidden paths and sudden openings to the surrounding landscape. As one approaches the house by car, the house appears suddenly on the street like a fresh and new calm presence. Its elevated position from the street gives the house a beautiful and calm setting, which offers an unobstructed view of the city. The main path from the street was carefully designed to take people gradually into the house, allowing for a patient and respectful encounter with the residents' private space. A curved wall welcomes and directs guests up the versatile exterior stairs, where hand cut stone steps alternate bigger concrete steps, suggesting the possibility of outdoor seating. Once on the top landing, one will face a clean wall; there, a moment of reflection is offered where the missing information kindly stimulate the guest's curiosity while arousing his awareness. The design 'forces' the man to listen, to connect. The answer to user's question is there. The user needs just to listen. The relationship between man and architecture become more intense, stimulating, awakening. Once the guest finds the desired information (concrete pathway), he/she can proceed and walk around the wall and discover the 'entrance'. Now the guest finds himself under the porch in a more intimate area, protected, feeling safer under the deck, arrived to destination. Once there, the house finally opens up to the guest with full height windows, signaling the opening of the next phase of the experience trough the richness of the metal entrance doors and the revealing of the warm interiors. A thoughtful use of details and finishes creates a fluid dialogue of warmth (wood) and sleek modern lines (metal), quietly offering the opportunity to engage this warm contemporary space at different levels, rather than imposing a fixed style and rigid experience upon the guest. The inside space of the house creates an open and peaceful atmosphere by providing a large and flexible space for many social activities and interactions. The owner's colorful art pieces throughout the house complement several built-in contemporary interior accents, giving this architectural space a modern and yet warm feeling, a harmonious prospective which is rarely found in Utah houses. Special attention is given to the design of the house through the use of simplicity and lightness of elements. The warm-contemporary look is further enhanced by the choice of colors and materials and the predominance of horizontal lines throughout.
